University of Canberra National Short Story Competition
1998 UNIVERSITY OF CANBERRA NATIONAL SHORT STORY COMPETITION
Total Prize Awards $7 500
OPEN SECTION
First Prize - $3 000
Second Prize - $1 500
Third prize - $500
TERTIARY STUDENT SECTION
First Prize - $1 500
Second Prize - $750
Third prize - $250
Stories should be in English and within the range of 2,000 - 3,000 words and may deal with any theme, but as this is a national short story competition, stories should reflect some aspect of Australian culture and society in all its diversity.
Entry fee: $5 per story
Opening date: 6 May 1998
Closing Date: 1 September 1998 (winners announced in early December)
The UC National Short Story Competition is administered by the Canberra Centre for Writing and Culture Studies, Faculty of Communication University of Canberra and supported by the University of Canberra, UCU and the University Co-Op Bookshop.

Lighting the Fuse: Writing for young and old
Hosted by the combined Writing Programs of South Australia
To be held from October 9th to 12th, 1998
The strands are
* Writing for children and young people
* Pathways into professional writing
* Writing in the community
* Living by writing
* There will be a special session dedicated to a presentation and discussion of the issues surrounding PhD and Masters degree submissions and supervision in creative writing.
